Scrounging through briars in the woods, for firewood- hauling, sawing, splitting and stacking it- is a universal task. All over the planet men women and children need fire for cooking and warmth. At one moment, yesterday, as I stacked oak and pecan sticks into the back of my son’s pick-up, I felt as if I had more in common with people in the third world than most citizens of the United States.
